World Ultimate Full Contact Championship (1988–2017)
Thirty Years of Elite International Competition in Portugal
This study presents the first comprehensive historical and statistical analysis of the World Ultimate Full Contact Championship (WUFC), covering 30 consecutive editions held in Portugal between 1988 and 2017.
The research integrates historical records, competition archives, and previously published scientific studies to examine international participation, competitive performance, and fight-ending patterns conducted under the Unified Rules of Ultimate Full Contact, pankration, free fight, vale tudo and mixed martial arts (MMA).
The documented dataset includes 689 athlete participations from 40 countries and 346 documented bouts across three decades of international competition. The study combines sports statistics, longitudinal analysis, Wilson confidence intervals and technical-tactical research on hybrid full-contact combat sports.
Beyond its scientific contribution, this work also serves as an open-access historical record of the WUFC competitive heritage and contributes to the preservation and study of international hybrid combat sports developed in Portugal.
